Ghostbusters
 What It's About:Three "parapsychologists" (Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Dan Ackroyd) open up a ghost busting shop, intent on doing away with evil spirits. They don't have a lot of business. But then the kitchen of the beautiful Signourney Weaver is invaded and her neighbor (Rick Moranis) notices nasty beasts in their apartment hallway. The boys head off to work and never look back. Business booms, eventually leading them to a massive confrontation between good and evil on the streets of New York City, with a big marshmallow man saving the day. What Parents Need to Know: Who you gonna call for laughs and a fun two hours? Ghostbusters, of course. A goofy, special-effects laden movie that is laugh-out-loud funny in nearly every scene, "Ghostbusters" is equal parts comedy and spectacle. It can get a little scary for younger viewers, although even the scary parts are presented in a humorous way. The dialogue can get heavy when Harold Ramis discusses paranormal activity, but thankfully, we have Bill Murray's reactions to keep the pace light and fun. Occasional salty language and sexual innuendo make it more appropriate for the pre-teen crowd and older. The Bottom Line: The thing about "Ghostbusters" is that it is just flat out a funny movie. You can't have Murray, Ackroyd and Ramis together and not have the makings of a great comedy. The special effects were pretty cool too for their time, although in this day and age of technical wizardry they can look a little lame. The humor can be a bit sophisticated for little tykes, and some of the ghosts are scary. Preteens will get the jokes and like the ghosts, but kindergarteners may be overwhelmed by the whole thing. The Scoop: My kids watched this as young as six-years-old and liked it, although they couldn't sit through the whole thing. Now my nine-year-old is in its thrall, giggling at the funny scenes and recognizing that the ghosts aren't threatening. This isn't a movie for younger children, if only because the humor and plot can be intricate. It's funny, occasionally vulgar, and always engaging. There are no big questions that come out of "Ghostbusters," but it does introduce the concept of ghosts and good versus evil. |
