Historic Chelsea Plantation is one of the finest examples of early 18th Century Georgian architecture in the U.S. The grounds of Chelsea encompass nearly five acres of lawn with extensive English Boxwood gardens, overlooking the Mattaponi River. During the Revolutionary War, General LaFayette's army was encamped on Chelsea Plantation with the mansion house serving as head quarters. In 1764, Thomas Jefferson attended a wedding in the gardens of Chelsea. Come stroll across the lawns and gardens, and loose yourself in the serenity and history of Chelsea.

With recreational activities and opportunities to look at life in a bygone era, Chippokes Plantation offers something for everyone. A working farm since 1617, visitors may tour an antebellum mansion, stroll through formal gardens, or view a collection of antique farm and forestry equipment and a sawmill exhibit at the Farm and Forestry Museum. A campground and three unique overnight cottages allow visitors to spend the night on the historic grounds. The park features a large pool, a visitor center, gift shop, interpretive programs, two playgrounds and opportunities to bike, hike, ride your horse and picnic. Events include the Steam and Gas Engine Show in June; Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival in July; Plantation Christmas Craft Festival in October; and Christmas Open House in December. It’s in Surry County. Access is via State Route 10.

Endview Plantation

Built in 1769 by Colonel William Harwood, Jr., signer of the Virginia Resolves, this home has experienced the ordeal of three wars. Endview was visited by Generals George Washington, Thomas Nelson, Jr. and George B. McClellan. The Revolutionary War brought 3,000 militia to its fresh water spring. The War of 1812 saw its use as a training ground, while the Civil War found Endview serving as a Confederate captain's home and a hospital for both sides. Restored to its 1862 appearance, The Civil War at Endview Plantation interprets rural Virginia life. The Civil War at Endview Plantation is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Group rates available. Closed major holidays. Located at Exit 247 from I-64, only minutes from Colonial Williamsburg and all Newport News attractions.

Westover Plantation

Built by William Byrd II in 1730, it is the nation's premier example of a Georgian domestic complex. Its stately air and graceful proportions symbolize the high level of architectural quality attained during the colonial era. Complementing the house are gardens and outbuildings, as well as a unique clairvoyee embellished with stone finials and wrought-iron gates.
