Bordering the Chesapeake Bay, Buckroe Beach offers wide beaches, two piers, a pavilion and spacious park area. During the summer months, visitors can swing to the sounds of the Sunday night Big Band concerts, or view an outdoor movie as part of the Wednesday night family film series.

Located at Chesapeake City Park is Chesapeake Skate Park, open for participants who wish to skateboard and roller blade. It includes a spine ramp, hip ramp,three-quarter pipe and a street area that includes a series of smaller ramps, boxed platforms and obstacles that can be moved to offer different courses. Participants must posses a City of Chesapeake Community Center ID card or visitor's pass. Passes are not available at Park, but can be purchased at any Community Center.

With recreational activities and opportunities to look at life in a bygone era, Chippokes Plantation offers something for everyone. A working farm since 1617, visitors may tour an antebellum mansion, stroll through formal gardens, or view a collection of antique farm and forestry equipment and a sawmill exhibit at the Farm and Forestry Museum. A campground and three unique overnight cottages allow visitors to spend the night on the historic grounds. The park features a large pool, a visitor center, gift shop, interpretive programs, two playgrounds and opportunities to bike, hike, ride your horse and picnic. Events include the Steam and Gas Engine Show in June; Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival in July; Plantation Christmas Craft Festival in October; and Christmas Open House in December. It’s in Surry County. Access is via State Route 10.

The Colonial Parkway is a 23-mile scenic drive connecting the historic sites of Historic Jamestowne, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Yorktown Battlefield. Free of any modern commercial development, the parkway was designed to provide continuity to the visitor experience of motoring through nearly 400 years of American colonial history. Traversing a diverse environment, the parkway provides visitors with dramatic open vistas of the James and York rivers and tidal estuaries as well as shady passageways through pine and hardwood forests.

False Cape State Park

One of few remaining undeveloped areas along the Atlantic coast, False Cape offers a chance to experience nature in a one-of-a kind setting. A huge migratory bird population and a variety of wildlife, plants and trees make the park an outdoor classroom. The park is accessible only by foot, bicycle, beach transporter, tram or boat. Tram transportation through Back Bay Wildlife Refuge is available April through October. For tram reservations, call (757) 498-2473. Between Nov. 1 and March 31, access to the park is restricted to the beach or via the park’s beach transporter, the Terra Gator. Call 1-800-933-PARK for Terra Gator reservations. Tram or Terra Gator transportation is not available to campers. Location: Southeast of Virginia Beach, 5 miles south of Sandbridge. No vehicular access.

First Landing State Park

On April 26, 1607, 100 English settlers landed here and established the first elective government in English America before pushing up the James River to establish Jamestown. The park offers a chance to explore a unique habitat featuring lagoons, large cypress trees and rare plants. More than 19 miles of hiking trails wind through the natural area, and guided kayak ecological tours allow exploration of the marshes and bays. Climate-controlled cabins, campsites, picnic areas, boat ramps, kayak rentals, and a bicycle trail are also available. Its Chesapeake Bay Center has aquariums and a wet lab operated by the Virginia Marine Science Museum, educational displays, historic exhibits, a camp store, an amphitheater and a Gateways Program regional welcome center. It hosts the Fall Harvest Festival in October. It’s off U.S. 60 at Cape Henry.

Fort Boykin Historic Park is situated high on the bluffs of the James River about 6 miles west of Smithfield. Originally named "The Castle", it was later named for General Francis Boykin, a local merchant and one-time sheriff of Smithfield, who fought alongside George Washington. Construction was begun in 1623 to protect the colonists from the Indians and raiding Spaniards. The fort, built in the shape of a seven pointed star, has been involved in every major campaign fought on American soil. Also the most advantageous spot for viewing the Ghost Fleet of the Atlantic. Complimentary admission. Open Daily from 8:00 a.m. to dusk.

Fun Forest is the ultimate children’s playground, imagination center and family adventure area! It was built by over 1,800 volunteers from private, public, and community sectors, open since 1995, and winner of the Virginia Recreation and Parks Society “Best New Facility in Virginia” award in 1996. The playground has an older children’s area which encourages gross motor-skill development and features a dragon, three-way underground telephone, shaky bridge, dolphin tunnel slide, and many more challenges for the older child. The science and learning area teaches mathematics and science while children have fun playing with mirrors, whisper dishes, and a planet walk. The toddler playground invites little ones to steer a plane or truck, swing, slide and more. Fun Forest is truly a place for the entire family!

Great Neck Park is a 70 acre district park located in the Lynnhaven District. Facilities include four baseball fields with clay infields, one informal softball backstop, five large group shelters, seven mini-shelters, family picnic tables and grills, three playgrounds, horseshoe pits, volleyball courts, and restrooms. Balls, horseshoes and bats may be checked out of the park office with a driver's license or other form of identification. In addition, a gazebo located at the end of a scenic walkway overlooks the Lynnhaven River.

This 60-acre park is open sunrise to sunset daily and offers a public beach fronting the James River. Lifeguards are on duty and a beach food concession is open during the summer months. The public boat ramp is open all year and accommodates boats with trailers up to 30-feet in length. The Rose Garden features forty-five varieties and the tennis center has twenty lighted outdoor hard courts. Fort Fun, a 13,000-square foot playground, overlooks the James River. Fishing for brook, brown and rainbow trout at Lake Biggins from November to March each year. Fishing licenses for Virginia residents and non-residents (including international visitors) are available at many area sporting goods stores. Also located in Huntington Park is the Virginia War Museum which showcases America’s military history from the Revolutionary War to the present day.
