Back Bay Refuge contains over 8,000 acres. Habitats include beach, dunes, woodland, farm fields, and marsh. The majority of refuge marshlands are on islands contained within the waters of Back Bay. Approximately 10,000 snow geese and a large variety of ducks visit Back Bay Refuge during the peak of fall migration, usually in December. The refuge also provides habitat for a wide assortment of other wildlife, including threatened and endangered species such as loggerhead sea turtles, piping plovers, peregrine falcons, and bald eagles. Back Bay provides scenic trails, a visitor contact station, and, with advance scheduling, group educational opportunities. Fishing, hunting, bicycling and hiking are available. The Back Bay Refuge is located near Virginia Beach - south of Sandbridge at the southern end of Sandpiper Road.

Bordering the Chesapeake Bay, Buckroe Beach offers wide beaches, two piers, a pavilion and spacious park area. During the summer months, visitors can swing to the sounds of the Sunday night Big Band concerts, or view an outdoor movie as part of the Wednesday night family film series.

This 60-acre park is open sunrise to sunset daily and offers a public beach fronting the James River. Lifeguards are on duty and a beach food concession is open during the summer months. The public boat ramp is open all year and accommodates boats with trailers up to 30-feet in length. The Rose Garden features forty-five varieties and the tennis center has twenty lighted outdoor hard courts. Fort Fun, a 13,000-square foot playground, overlooks the James River. Fishing for brook, brown and rainbow trout at Lake Biggins from November to March each year. Fishing licenses for Virginia residents and non-residents (including international visitors) are available at many area sporting goods stores. Also located in Huntington Park is the Virginia War Museum which showcases America’s military history from the Revolutionary War to the present day.

The newest boat ramp in Virginia Beach features 4 concrete boat launch lanes with associated temporary mooring areas, canoe/kayak launch area, car with boat trailer parking spaces, lighting, restrooms with shower and foot rinse areas, changing areas, car parking for beach access, an information kiosk, vending machines and a walkway (under the Lesner Bridge) to the Ocean Park Beach Area on the Chesapeake Bay. Boat launch fees are: $5.00 for those with a Virginia Saltwater Fishing license and $10 for those without a Virginia Saltwater Fishing license.
