Virginia's Eastern Shore region is accessible via the 17.5-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, a wonder in itself. Step back to a time of old railroad towns and quaint fishing villages, and listen for the unique old-world accents spoken here, especially by Tangier Island residents. Shop at a roadside stand or learn how to do some crabbin' from a pier.
The Eastern Shore stretches just 70 miles and is situated between the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean—a perfect place to see birds, birds, and more birds. Be sure to check out the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, Wreck & Bone Island Natural Area Preserve, and Kiptopeke State Park (home of the Eastern Shore Birding Festival, held in October).
One of the most beloved sites on the Eastern Shore is the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, where the annual Pony Swim and Auction takes place. This event was made famous by author Margurite Henry's Misty of Chincoteague. Walk on Assateague's beaches and watch wild ponies feeding on the wild marsh grasses.
Other places to see on the Eastern Shore include the Assateague Lighthouse, the village of Onancock, the Eastern Shore Railway Museum, and Wallop's Island NASA Visitors' Center. Accommodations are cozy here at B&Bs and inns, and the seafood can't be beat. You'll also love the out-of-the-way beaches, where you might not meet another human for miles.
