Virginia
Central
Passions certainly shaped experiences in Central Virginia. Hear the echoes from our nation's Founding Fathers at these history and heritage sites: Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland, James Madison's Montpelier, and Patrick Henry's Red Hill. Also be sure to visit Henricus Historical Park (where Pocahontas grew up), Flowerdew Hundred, and
Germanna Historic Site.
And take the Civil War Trails that follow the campaigns and preserved battlefields through Richmond, Petersburg, and Appomattox. Stop in at the Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, Museum & White House of the Confederacy, Appomattox Court House & National Historical Park, and Monument Avenue, one of the most famous avenues in the nation. The National D-Day Memorial was build in Bedford to honor the community that lost more solders per capita than any other during the invasion of Normandy in World War II.
While in the region, you might even hear the roar of racing engines at NASCAR tracks at Richmond, Martinsville, and South Boston. Outdoors and sports in Central Virginia offer everything from ballooning and camping to horseback riding and tennis, as well as 11 State Parks and beautiful gardens. Children of all ages love Paramount's King's Dominion with 12 world-class roller coasters.
For cultural interests, see the spectacular Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, tour more than 20 vineyards and wineries, and enjoy events such as heritage festivals, steeplechase races, and arts and crafts fairs. Two of the most prestigious resorts are in Central Virginia—Wintergreen and Boar's Head Inn—as well as the famous Jefferson Hotel, which has been a premiere hotel for more than a century.
