Blue Ridge Highlands
As the Birthplace of Country Music, take the Crooked Road, Virginia's Heritage Music Trail, on a musical journey through the Blue Ridge Highlands to: Bristol (Birthplace of Country Music), Fiddling Conventions (such as the granddaddy of 'em all—Galax!), and Floyd Country Store for Friday Night Jamborees.
The beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway—"America's Most Scenic Drive"—runs through this region of Virginia and offers an abundance of places to see wildlife. On your drive, make sure to stop in at Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area, Crooked Creek Wildlife Management Area, and State Parks in the Blue Ridge Highlands.
Abingdon has so much going on all the time but is known around the world for its Barter Theatre, The State Theater of Virginia, its two-week-long Virginia Highlands Festival, and Abingdon Historic District with its charming residences and craft shops.
Blacksburg is home to Virginia Tech, the state's largest university and home of Lane Stadium, where NCAA Hokies Football is played.
Before you leave the region, be sure to visit Saltville, "The Salt Capitol of the Confederacy," and its Museum of the Middle Appalachians, which pretty much sums up the geology, heritage, and economic history of the region.
The Blue Ridge Highlands premiere Primland Resort offers mountain-top chalets, elegant dining, and activities such as flyfishing and wingshooting, as well as mountain biking and ATV trails.
