Andrew Archibald Macdonald
Charlottetown,  Prince Edward Island

A Father of Confederation, he attended the Charlottetown and Quebec conferences of 1864 and on the latter occasion, compiled notes which provided one of the few original sources of information on that conference. Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island from 1884-1889, and a Senator from 1891-1912. Born in Brudenell Point, February 14, 1829. He died in Ottawa, March 21, 1912. He is buried in the People's Cemetery. The grave is marked by the Government of Canada.

Beaconsfield Historic House

One of the Island's finest residences, built in 1877 for James Peake Jr., a shipbuilder and merchant, Beaconsfield was an expression of his wealth and social position. Experience the lovely gardens and the view of Charlottetown Harbour. Restored to the early 20th century, the site offers a program of house tours and lectures, and special events in the Carriage House. Headquarters of the PEI Museum. Open year round. Admission charged May-Oct.

Blockhouse Point Lighthouse
Rocky Point,  Prince Edward Island

Established in 1851, located on the west side of the entrance to Charlottetown Harbour.

Cape Egmont Lighthouse
Cape Egmont,  Prince Edward Island

Built in 1864, this 42 foot lighthouse is the same design as the Wood Islands and Cape Bear Lighthouses. Coastal erosion made it necessary to move the lighthouse back from the edge of the cliff in 1998.

To get to the lighthouse, turn at a curve in the road where the paved road goes to Fishing Cove Harbour, then take the gravel road in through the woods. The lighthouse is on the point. Use caution near the high bank.

Located on the corner of Kent and Queen Streets. Built in 1888, the Charlottetown City Hall is the oldest municipal hall in Prince Edward Island. Designed by Phillips and Chappell in the Romanesque Revival style often favoured for 19th-century civic buildings.

Colonel John Hamilton Gray C.M.G.
Charlottetown,  Prince Edward Island

A Father of Confederation, he served with the Imperial Forces in India and Africa. He was Premier of Prince Edward Island between 1863-1865. Born in Charlottetown, June 14, 1811. Died in Charlottetown, August 13, 1887. He is buried at the Sherwood Cemetery. The grave is marked by the Government of Canada.

Dalvay By The Sea
Stanhope,  Prince Edward Island

Built between 1896 and 1899 by Alexander MacDonald of Cincinnati, Dalvay-By-The-Sea is a fine example of a summer house in Queen Anne Revival style. This style was favoured for Canadian domestic architecture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Commemorating the 400th anniversary of the landing of Jacques Cartier on this island on June 30 and July 1534. "... all the said land is low and plaine, and the fairest that may possibly be seene, full of goodly medowes and trees."

East Point Lighthouse
East Point,  Prince Edward Island

This lighthouse is one of the Island's last manned lighthouses and is one of the most popular sights on the Island. It is also one of the busiest aids to navigation stations for both deep sea traffic and the inshore and offshore fishery.
The light was put in operation during the winter months between 1940 to 1945 as an aid to the local Flying Schools. In 1965, there was a construction of a dwelling. It is presently running by means of electricity.

Edward Palmer
Charlottetown,  Prince Edward Island

A Father of Confederation, Palmer was a delegate to the Charlottetown and Quebec conferences. He was a member of the legislature and of the Legislative Council from 1835-60 and 1860-73 respectively. He was also the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of PEI from 1874-89. Born in Charlottetown, September 1, 1809. He died in Charlottetown November 3, 1889. He is buried at the Sherwood Cemetery. The grave is marked by the Government of Canada.

Fairholm

Located on Fitzroy St., close to the intersection with Prince St. This superb, picturesque villa is one of the finest homes built in pre-Confederation Canada. Constructed about 1839 for politician and administrator Thomas H. Haviland Sr. A rare example of early brick construction on the Island.

First Submarine Telegraph in America
Cape Traverse,  Prince Edward Island

Commemorating the laying of the first substantial submarine cable in America. It extended from Carleton Head, PEI to Cape Tormentine, NB. Laid by Frederick Newton Gisborne, Monday November 22, 1852.

Former Summerside Post Office
Summerside,  Prince Edward Island

Located at Summerside Town Hall. Built from 1883-86, this structure was designed under the direction of Thomas Fuller who served as Chief Architect of the Department of Public Works from 1881-86. This basic design was adapted to many small post offices across the country and came to symbolize the federal presence throughout Canada.

Franklin Knight Lane
DeSable,  Prince Edward Island

Born in Desable, PEI July 15, 1864. Rose to eminence in the United States of America. Inter State Commerce Commissioner, 1906-1913. Secretary of the Interior, 1913-1920. Died in Rochester, Minnesota, May 18, 1921.

George Coles
Charlottetown,  Prince Edward Island

Father of Confederation, thrice Premier of Prince Edward Island, (1851-54, 1855-59, 1867-69). Born in Charlottetown, September 20, 1810. Died in Charlottetown, August 21, 1875. He is buried at the St. Peter's Cemetery. The grave is marked by the Government of Canada.

In 1833-34 local contractors Isaac Smith, Henry Smith and Nathan Wright built Government House, a finely proportioned framed structure of neo-classical style as the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of PEI Before the attainment of Responsible Government in 1851, it served as the seat of the Colonial Executive power. Through the years this house has provided a setting of simple elegance for the formal entertainment of the island community and its distinguished visitors.

Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) Author of Anne of Green Gables, this was the first in a series of novels which cast a romantic glow over her native province and gained for her international fame as the creator of "one of the most loveable children in English fiction."

Hughes Drug Store/Apothecaries Hall Historic Monument
Charlottetown,  Prince Edward Island

On December 24, 1810, Thomas Desbrisay Jr. opened an apothecary shop on this site. In 1874, George Hughes bought Apothecaries Hall and operated it under the title "Apothecaries Hall - Hughes Drug Co. Ltd." The original building was replaced by the present brick structure in 1900. Mounted on the corner of the building presently housing COW'S Ice Cream on the corner of Queen and Grafton Streets.
