Skating
What you need
Ice skates

What it costs If you skate at an indoor rink, admission is generally less than $10 per person. Outdoor rinks (and of course frozen lakes and rivers) are generally free. You can rent skates for a few dollars. Buying a pair of ice skates will usually cost $35 and up.

Tip Kids can learn to ice skate by pushing a large pylon in front of them. See if your local rink will allow this. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that children only skate on approved surfaces (for example, a lake may look like it's frozen solid, but it may have hidden soft areas), and to look for signs posted by local recreation departments or police. Children should wear a hockey or ski helmet while skating.
