Skiing What it costs Skiing can be expensive. Skis, bindings and poles can cost $400 and up, but there are more inexpensive options out there if you take the time to look (see [Winter Gear for Less)]. Lift tickets for downhill skiing are generally in the neighborhood of $40 per person. Cross-country skiers can take advantage of free trails and other low-cost locations like state and provincial parks. Rent skis at least a few times, until you are sure you like skiing enough to make the investment worthwhile. Renting is also practical if your kids will outgrow the gear quickly. Tip Kids generally don’t use poles until they have mastered the basics of skiing. The National Ski Patrol recommends that all skiers, especially kids, wear a helmet. Look for one specifically designed for snowsports.
