This historic western cowboy town, with 70 bars and restaurants and a range of lodging, is a family favorite. What makes it especially attractive, according to Jerry Knightly of Skican, Canada’s oldest and largest ski and snowboard tour operator, is that, "It’s a very contained village, easy for families to have their kids participate in programs, yet not get removed from each other." There are 9000 beds 300 yards from the base of ski area where guests board the gondola, plus dedicated terrain for kids, and adults accompanying kids; daycare for children aged six-months to six-years-old; and "The Rough Riders" ski/snowboarding program for kids grade one through 15-years-old. Last year, the resort launched a unique a wristband location system. Scan your band at a kiosk, and you’ll see the locations of all the others in your group displayed on a map — you can even leave them messages. Kids in the ski school each get one. A family of four can rent them for a week for $25. Steamboat was the first resort to start a "Kids Fly Free" program. This year, when a parent purchases two nights lodging, a two-day lift ticket and round-trip air fare, one child aged twelve or younger can fly free (the United version includes service from Canada.)
