Overcoming obstacles, breaking through fear, using available resources…all is covered in this lovely movie about Akeelah Anderson (Keke Palmer), an 11-year-old girl from South Los Angeles, a poor neighborhood where dreams are few and far between. But when it's discovered that Akeelah has a gift for spelling, she goes all the way to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. and learns a few life-lessons along the way. The message?
